• Clearly, I would make a bad businessman

Posted in Blog Traffic | Thursday 2 October 2008 9:36 pm

One of the worst things you can do for your blog traffic is to disappear for the better part of a month. That’s what I just did. Long story short, work was busy: I spent at least a week preparing for what ended up being a fool’s errand. Then I got a last minute gig to put together a Gregorian chant schola at the National Shrine in Washington, D.C. this past weekend. Last week, therefore, more closely resembled Christmas or Eastertide for me. I am presently on a self-imposed three day vacation and trying not to do anything but the most minimal tasks.

In any case, while I’ve been pre-occupied, the rank and file of the USA scored a major victory when the $700 billion bailout went down to ignominious defeat yesterday–which was, of all days, Ludwig von Mises’ birthday. The question remains as to whether or not the plutocrats will try this again, starting instead in the Senate.

In short, there is much to write about, and I hope to catch you up on all my most irreverent and iconoclastic political thoughts in the next few days.

    Unfortunately, there’s a lot of fools’ gold………

Posted in Blog Traffic | Thursday 2 October 2008 9:36 pm

Once you’ve built your masterpiece, you have to spread the word. Submitting your Web site to search engines, directories and related sites is critical to success. The real Web-savvy companies have whole teams of geeks who spend their days figuring out how to get better rankings in search engines.

Unfortunately, there’s a lot of fools’ gold, bad advice and even downright scams in the Web site promotion field. If you go about promoting your site the wrong way, you can actually hurt traffic instead of helping to build it. Here are 10 things you should definitely not do, no matter how tempting some spam message makes it sound:

    1 - Spam Not!

This is the cardinal rule of Netiquette. Mass, unsolicited e-mail is not acceptable, anywhere, for any reason. There are hundreds of hustlers out there trying to sell you databases and software that you can use to spam, but don’t believe their promises. Spamming will make enemies for you, not friends. It can also get you barred from large ISPs, crippling your traffic.

2 - Don’t shell out big for submission services.

Submit your site to 500 search engines for $19.95! Bad deal. There aren’t 500, or even 100, search engines worth submitting to. The 19.95ers simply run your URL through an auto-submitter (like Selfpromotion.com or submitit.com), which you can do yourself for free. If you want a professional to submit your site, plan on spending a few hundred bucks at most, which should buy you a careful and thorough job. I myself currently offer a basic submission service for $350, and I admit that I’m a little pricey. Insist on receiving documentation of everything that’s been done, including all e-mail autoresponses from the search engines.

3 - Don’t waste time on the flotsam and jetsam of the Web.

Submit your site to the major search engines and directories, perhaps using one of the auto-submitters for some, and doing others individually. There are about 30 that are worth submitting to. Then seek out specialized directories that are appropriate for your site (travel, investment, shopping, country-specific, etc.). Don’t waste time with obscure search engines and kids’ links pages. There are billions of pages like this, but they get zilcho traffic. Your time is better spent carefully crafting your submission to Yahoo.

4 - Don’t rush through your Yahoo submission.

Yahoo is by far the most important directory, and the hardest to get into. Submissions are reviewed by real editors, so follow the instructions to the letter, and really try to convince them that your site is a useful resource. Some good tips are to be found on the rather obscure page called “My Site on Yahoo,” and selfpromotion.com also has some good Yahoo tips.

5 - Never submit your site until it’s open for business.

Test your site thoroughly, and make sure every section is complete before you begin submitting. Most surfers will never return to a URL where they found a dead link or an “under construction” sign.

6 - Don’t forget to integrate your URL into your business.

It’s amazing how many companies spend big bucks to build a Web site, then balk at the cost of printing new business cards to include the URL. Your Web site URL should be on every piece of company media from letterheads to coffee cups - anywhere that a phone number would be included.

    7 - Don’t mess with black magic.

There are a lot of sneaky tricks discussed in the various Web promotion newsgroups and mailing lists, that claim to improve your search engine rankings. Loading your page with invisible keywords, creating special “doorway” pages with magic dust on them, and secret programs (for $19.95) that “force-feed” your page to search engines. Don’t fool with it. The search engines and directories wage an ongoing battle against those who would “beat the system,” and they can and will bar you if they suspect you of “spamming” them. Do use META tags, keywords in titles and body text, and that sort of thing, but don’t overdo it, and always follow the submission rules.

8 - Don’t put anything in your Web site directory that you don’t want the public to see.

Most of us have a few “test” pages, or perhaps pages of personal material, that we keep on our Web server, but that isn’t meant to be seen by the public. Straight search engines like Excite and Altavista, however, will automatically “spider” and index every page on your site, unless you tell them not to. Create a text file called “robots.txt,” and place it in your Web site’s root directory (usually the “htdocs” directory). This file has a list of pages or directories that you want to keep the spiders out of, and it looks something like this:

    User-agent: *
    Disallow: /test/
    Disallow: /temporary/
    Disallow: /templates/

This tells all visiting spiders not to fool with any of the 3 named directories. Note that the directory names must end with a “/”.

9 - Don’t neglect to measure your traffic.

Some wise man said, “If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it.” Be sure to keep your server log files safe, and use the software tool of your choice to analyze them. Your ISP may offer one or more free tools for your use. Getstats is one popular free one. If you can shell out a few hundred bucks, high-powered traffic analysis packages like Hit List or Web Trends can really help you boost your traffic by telling you how many hits are coming from each search engine, and what keywords people are searching on to reach your site.

    10 - When you’re finished, don’t stop!

Site promotion is an ongoing process. Once you’ve made your submissions, check back a month later, and you’ll find that some of them didn’t take. Resubmit as necessary, but don’t overdo it. Always be on the lookout for new sites that might be willing to give you a link, and for new (but legitimate and preferably free) promotion opportunities.

    Viral Marketing

Posted in Blog Traffic | Saturday 27 September 2008 3:33 pm

The earn a few thousand bucks a month online is the dream of bloggers. Some can do it, but most fail badly. The basic strategic mistake committed by most is “not any having strategy” at all. Most bloggers do not know what to do: they don’t know where to start, they don’t know what is important, and they don’t even know how to market their good blog. Their marketing strategy is pure machine gunning, shooting everywhere without knowing where the target is. Some bullets hit but most don’t.

To succeed in building a money-making blog is to know the right strategy and to walk the way. In a way, be a sniper, hit the target with less effort! One strategy that is mostly used is to create viral traffic. This strategy has been effectively used by Mark Flavin in his Internet Marketing Blog. Creating viral traffic is about doing things once, and having continual traffic. More traffic basicly means more money.

SEO Linking Tips to increase Blog Traffic and Ranking

Posted in Blog Traffic | Thursday 25 September 2008 10:58 am

Growing traffic and improving your blog’s ranking is possible through natural linking strategies. A link is a validation of your blog’s content quality, newsworthiness of your blog and your reputation as a subject matter expert.

It’s like our own reputation in a community where we live. How would someone recommend us as a good doctor, consultant, accountant or businessman? Only when we have developed a reputation in our domain, would friends, colleagues and neighbors recommend us to someone. That’s exactly the way Google sees a link to your site – as a validation of the quality of content.

Your blog’s ranking on search engines like Google is in some ways determined by the links to your blog. The value of the links is determined by the quality, relevance and quantity of the sites or blogs linking to you.

Quality of the site that Links

The quality of the blog or site that links to you is important. The site must be focused on your subject; or atleast related to your blog content. The number of links into that site is also key to determining the quality of the link to your blog. How the site or blog links – whether it’s a small comment or complete review of your site, just a recommended link among many other links or a quote from your blog post.

So when you write to webmasters or bloggers seeking a link on their site, first find out the relevance of the site and its quality.

Beware of those who try to cheat search engines by using black hat techniques – submitting to a large number of sites using a software, adopting cloaking, scraping someone’s content, linking to porn or adult sites, linking to illegal sites or doing sneaky re-directs etc. Don’t touch them with even a barge pole. Don’t link to them.

Quantity of Links matter in Google ranking a blog

Yes, the quantity certainly matters in ranking your blog higher in search engine results pages. The best way to get a good number of natural links is to write good and original content, post frequently and build your authority on the subject. Once people see that you have quality content, they’ll start linking to your blog.

When you have built a fair number of pages of content, only then should you write to other bloggers and sites seeking a link.

Relevance of the link determines the ranking too

This means that if you have a blog that teaches users to play golf, then a link from a site that has news of the latest happenings in the golf circuit, sells golf accessories, a golf forum or a golf club is relevant. If it’s from a blog or site on Barbie dolls, self help, online money making, fashion or some personal ramblings of a blogger, it’s not relevant to users of those sites.

The inbound link should fall within the subject of your blog post or blog. Then it’s a relevant link. The reason being the link becomes useful to users who are looking for such content. For shoppers on a furniture site, a link to your golf blog is not useful or relevant; therefore Google and other search engines are likely to give it less weightage.

    Seo4google.org Tips on Linking

The ranking of the site that has the inbound link matters a lot in ranking

The relevance of the subject and context of the blog or site

Where the link is placed – home page or inner page

The anchor text (the words used to hyperlink your blog url)

Whether it’s a review of your blog or just an article link

The number of inbound links to that site

The traffic to the site or blog

The number of users who click from there and land up on your site

The quality and relevance of other links on that page

While blogging, remember all these are important in getting a high rank on Google and improving traffic to your blog.

    Traffic to Your Website

Posted in Blog Traffic | Friday 12 September 2008 9:20 pm

Traffic is the lifeblood of any website. No traffic usually translates as no sales. It is understandable why people can become desperate and go for bulk traffic in the hope that out of 10,000 names 500 will make a purchase or join their list and they will become rich overnight.

It is a well known fact that this does not happen. Any traffic that is not targeted is really a waste of your money. Your traffic should be quality and not quantity.

Sending out emails to an untargeted audience is not really smart marketing because you will be sending commercial emails to people who do not know you. There is no guarantee that you will get a favourable response from people who are mostly using throw away email addresses because they do not want to be inundated by a deluge of emails.

Most of the people on these safe lists know that they will be receiving emails from other members. These are people who are mostly trying to sell something not buy something. This is actually one of the conditions of their “safe list” membership.

The main problem is that they are more likely to delete your emails than read them. It is one of those things about human nature. They want you to read their emails and respond to them but not the other way around.

In my experience, and I have tried safe lists, everyone is sending emails to each other but no one is reading them never mind making a purchase!

Why take your chances with this form of traffic?

I am sure there are marketers out there who can make this form of traffic generation work however I would not advise it. Build your own traffic.

You can be rest assured that one of the reasons your emails may not get read is because some of these marketers have simply used a throw away email address, one they hardly ever use so they can simply batch your emails in 100’s and press the delete button. Like I mentioned earlier this is certainly not smart marketing if you are using safe lists.

It makes sense then to build your own mailing list. Do not be tempted by all what safe lists appear to offer or how many members there are on a safe list. It is not all about numbers what you really need to make money online are targeted and responsive subscribers.

    Visitors VRS Hits

Posted in Blog Traffic | Tuesday 9 September 2008 3:05 pm

Server logs come in raw data that most hosting companies will provide you with the information in reading form. These programs will allow you to analyze who is sending you traffic, and how many hits and visitors you have had.

The word ?hits? has been used all to much as a catch phrase for traffic hitting a web site. It is handy to group all traffic to a site as a hit, but in reality the traffic should be divided into two groups, hits and visitors.

A visitor can be described as a click from one place on the net to your site. In your server logs a visitor will be credited with visiting your site despite the pages that visitor may have looked at while at your site. For example, if that person entered a shoe store and looked at one pair of shoes, they would be counted as one visitor despite the number of shoes they tried on.

A hit on the other hand is a click on any page of the site and represents a multiple of the visitors. So when you take a look at your server logs, a hit represents how many times visitors hit site pages. A hit in a shoe store would be every pair of shoes that person tried on would be a hit.

You may be wondering which one to study then, if they both are analyzed on the server log, and both serve a purpose, which has the biggest impact on your business? The simple answer is that both are important statistics and both have their place in your study. The visitors are important because they show how many people are being directed to your site. It is always good to see how many potential customers are coming your way.

Since hits represent the total number of pages viewed, you can use this information to see how well you website is doing it?s job. Is it enticing visitors to dig deeper and get to the meatier pages? Or are people passing through, taking one look at the first page moving on? Hits are important because they show every visitors history at your site. The best way to determine the depth of your site is to divide the number of hits by the number of visitors for a certain time period. By doing this you will know if people are looking at one pair of shoes or if they are looking around.

Do not discredit the power of the server log, and more so he power of hits verses visitors. Both can give you some insight to the future of your site.

    Upgrade Traffic to Subscribers

Posted in Blog Traffic, blog | Friday 5 September 2008 12:26 am

Everyone has been surfing the net at some point, jumping from page to page aimlessly, and couldn?t remember where they were ten pages ago. Unfortunately, if that site ten pages ago did not get your email address they just lost a potential customer. It is a fact that if a person leaves your site without becoming a subscriber, they will probably never return. Most people behave rather impulsively on the Internet, it is all about what catches our attention at the moment, so we can easily forget where we were only a few pages before. When we surf the net we become like little kids with about 5 minute attention spans, following where ever our interest takes us at that exact moment.

You can have a thousand visitors a day to your site. Your traffic could be a steady stream of people, but if none of them stop and subscribe then all you have is a lot ?go sees? but nothing of substance. The amount of potential revenue lost would be staggering, can your business afford to lose those potential clients? By collecting a fraction of those emails you could be investing in the future of your business.

It is a common consensus that unique content will lure traffic back to your site. It is true that you should create a eye catching, unique site that your visitors will enjoy visiting and want to look at again, however it is not the one and only solution for you. To keep your visitors coming back, and not placing your site on the back burner of their mind, you will want to convert your traffic into subscribers.

A simple opt-in to your mailing list will gather your visitors emails so that they can be added to your mailing list. By filling out the opt-in form your visitors are agreeing to receive emails from you, and are agreeing to keep updated on what is going on with your site.

By collecting subscribers you are making it possible to follow up with them through emails, this will keep them from forgetting about your business. You will be able to endorse another offer to him or her, or get them to consider another offer. With a little salesmanship you can get a long way through emails, so you can see why gathering subscribers, and not letting them drive on by is so important to your business.

    One Way Link Building

Posted in Blog Traffic, Internet Marketing, SEO, backlink, google, pagerank | Tuesday 26 August 2008 7:12 pm

How can one way link building services help you and your business? In the world of internet marketing you probably already know by now that it is a tough and very competitive world out there. There are millions of websites, literally, and each one of them are trying to get customers just as you are. While not all are trying to get the same customers as you are, they are all trying to get customers. Now, your customer base will be a competitive field as well. You have other competition and they do want the same customers.

What can you do? There is a method called search engine optimization. This method is a host of techniques that work together to boost your ranking on the search engine and get your website noticed by your customer base, people searching for your keyword. Now, the problem is that other websites are trying for good ranking on the same keyword, at the same time. They too are trying to implement a good search engine optimization plan.

One method of search engine optimization is using one way link building services. Google uses many different elements to determine page rank. Links are extremely important to Google and the more links you have pointing to your website the better off you are. However, it is not always as easy as that. One way links are very difficult to get and maintain.

There are certain criteria that need to be met. First, these links must be of high quality. The links cannot be placed on link farms; this can actually hurt your page rank. The higher the quality of the page your link sits on, the better it is for your ranking. The links must also be from different websites. This means that each website your link is on, must come from an IP address different from all of the others.

Furthermore, the links must be permanent and one way. At one point in time, reciprocal links were the most common. You link to an important website and they link back to you. However, now a days more importance is placed on one way links than any other type.

Because this is hard to achieve, you can take many advantages of one way link building services. These services are offered by individuals or companies that are experienced in building one way links. They have access to websites that are high quality and accept one way links. Using these services can get your links on websites with high ranks on Google, which is ultimately important.

Provided that you use one way link building services that are reputable and experienced, you will find that your own rank increases and your customers have a better ability to find you and your services. One way links are just one method of search engine optimization that can help increase your popularity in the search engines and ultimately increase your traffic, sales, and income all at the same time, which is important to any business.

SEO Cheat to Increase Blog Traffic

Posted in Blog Traffic, Internet Marketing, SEO, blog | Monday 25 August 2008 9:02 pm

Keeping people interested in your blog, whether it is a business or personal blog, is key to attracting a lot of regular visitors. Many blogs have died because people have just lost interest. The main reason for the lack of interest is simply a lack of posts by the blogger. Regular, frequent posting, which will boost your blog?s ranking in search engines, is essential to the survival of any blog.

You might be asking yourself, what is frequent posting? How many blog entries should I make on a given week? How do I make frequent consistently good posts? What are the reasons for me to post frequently? In this newsletter, we will go over all of the above.

    What is frequent posting?

Frequent blog posting is posting enough to keep your readers interested. Obviously, people will not want to come back to a blog that hasn?t been updated in months. They want to see consistent posting so that they know coming back to check the blog next week to see if there are more posts won?t be a waste of time.

How many blog entries should I make each week?

This is one of the tougher questions to answer. It really depends on the purpose of your blog. If it?s a personal blog, a weekly or twice weekly update is an excellent idea. A political/sports/music/religion blog should have 3-4 posts per week. Business blogs should have at least 2 posts, but preferably 4 each week.

The thing to remember is that quality counts. Posting frequently just for the sake of posting frequently tends to result in subpar posts which people won?t care about. It is important to find a balance?frequent, quality posts that won?t result in burnout on your part. Why create 4 poor quality posts each week when you could post 2 quality posts per week?

How do I create quality postings on a consistent basis?

It?s all about following a consistent pattern of writing. Maybe you?re not a natural writer and this is difficult. That?s why we?ll give you an outline to help you.

    1. Pick a topic that is interesting to you and to your readers. Maybe if your blog is a personal blog, you could write about the latest happenings in Hollywood.

    2. Carefully think about what you?ll write about the topic. It makes it easy to make quality blog postings if you know exactly what you?ll write. Plot out everything about the post before even beginning to write it.

    3. Before writing your content, pick out some keywords that are relevant to your blog. If you naturally use keywords throughout your post, you will please search engine spiders which will get your blog ranked higher on search engines. Your visitors won?t mind the use of keywords if they are used in a tasteful way.

    4. Begin writing your post. Don?t limit yourself to a particular amount of words. Just do what?s natural. And if any blog post is hard for you, just take a timeout and relax. You should be able to finish the post a bit later on, after you?ve had some time to think things through, you should be able to finish the post with no problems.

    Why is frequent posting important?

Blogs are meant to be outlets for individuals or businesses. They are used to get an opinion out on something and to engage readers. Readers need to have something that makes them want to keep coming back to a blog. That something is usually quality, frequent posts.

Gaining and maintaining visitors isn?t the only reason to post often in your blog. Catching the eye of a search engine?and achieving a high ranking?is another valid reason for posting frequently. Most likely, each posting in your blog features some keywords or keyword phrases scattered throughout it. Logic says that the more natural keywords you have on a blog, the better. Thus, the more posts you make on your blog, the more keywords you have on there. And the more keywords you have, the more likely a search engine bot is to crawl your site. The more your site is crawled by bots, the more likely it is that you will have a high ranking on a search engine. Well, please forget the article’s title above. The best SEO is still frequent posting.

Frequent blog posting can be easy as long as the person who is posting takes the time to plot out what they?ll write about. So take a few minutes to think about your post and then just do it!

Advertising Your Blog In Your Email Signature

Posted in Blog Traffic | Tuesday 19 August 2008 10:21 pm

If you have a blog that you are particularly proud of, and that you want to share with other people, there are a lot of free ways that you can get your blog noticed.

One of those ways is something that you do everyday, and that you may not even consider as a way to share your blog. Put the link to your blog in your email signature.

Chances are that you send out emails more timese that you can count during the day, each time you send out an email, you can advertise your blog by putting the address of your blog in your email’s signature.

It’s always a good idea to write something catchy like, see what I am up to now, or Read my latest chapter here, depending on what type of blog you have.

The thing to remember about putting an advertisement in your signature for your blog is to make it short, but eyecatching.

You want people to be interested enough to want to click on it, but you also don’t want to scare them off.

Just like it is with any advertisement, you want to give them just enough to be interested and take a closer look at what it is that you are advertising.

Think about what it is that your blog is about. What is really going to interest people about it and want to visit. That is what you should include in your signature, and that is what is going to get people to go to your blog.

So I put my website info at the end of my post and hope blog readers will click and review my website. Please have your comment after reading this post.
