    Palatoschisi e Labioschisi

    Singapore F1 Grand Prix…

Posted in wordpress | Thursday 2 October 2008 9:44 pm

Have not been updating the blog for quite sometime. Nothing inspiring comes to mind since I’m back in the office. Mostly I’m just going to put pictures. Har…

Anyway I went for Singapore F1 Grand Prix. The first night race in Formula 1. I have 2 passes for the 3 day event. I bought it for the father whose birthday falls on Sunday but since he is not going on Friday, I might as well use the pass. So I got Olivia to tag along with me.

It’s not really crowded as I expected it to be even the queue at the entrace was a breeze. The thing which irks me in having such a ‘world class event’ is that, prices of items which I would normally pay would be marked up. Like for example a can of coke would cost me $0.90 from 7-11 but during the event the cokes which are sold from those white ‘posh’ marquee tents cost $3.00. The fried Hokkien noodles from Glutton Bay usually will cost me $4 per plate but during the event, all the stall owners marked up their price for all their food items. Hokkien noodles on that day cost $6 - $8. Are you kidding me? But the good thing is that, the organisers allow spectators to bring outside food. That really save me alot of bucks. Not like as if the ticket pass for the event is not expensive enough. Another irritating thing is that all spectators are assigned a number for their seats. However most of them didn’t get to their seats, they stood by the perimeter of the seating tier to watch the race and that left many of the seats unoccupied and also blocking our views. But anyway we are here not for the view but rather for the sound which somehows gives us our needed adrenaline rush - somewhat.

    Arhh well… picture time.

    Project Management Software

Posted in software, wordpress | Friday 12 September 2008 8:01 pm

Business means projects. Getting a project is one thing, managing and finishing a project successfully is another thing. Getting a project means money flowing in to our company. However, things might turn around if we could not finish the project on time or to the requirements of our client.

These are a few problems we might face during a project: getting everybody updated on what everybody has done; client’s emails containing important information ending up with the wrong member; difficulty in estimating true project costs because time spent on project tasks are not tracked down properly; communication issue as clients and working partners are miles away. Often, failure to manage the problems will result in redundancies and time wasting, subsequently high productivity cost.

A good project needs a good project management software for tasks and getting things done. I found out that Peletonics provides an easy to use project dashboard, and most importantly it can enable us to handle all the challenges above. Remember that good project management means good productivity and ,of course, profit.

This is how Pelotonics works perfectly for projects:

    1. Projects can easily be categorised into TO DO and MILETONES, and be added into the CALENDAR. Relevant Parties will be informed automatically such that everyone will know the updated status for all the tasks. If we need reports, well they are all ready for printing.

    2. Pelotonics has an effective messaging system. All updates, comments and relevant files submitted by team and clients will be sent to the management portal, after which relevant parties will be informed.

    3. Pelotonics provides special feature for time-tracking. We can easily identify bottlenecks and adjust accordingly before they become problems.

    4. I like the friendly Overview and Dashboard pages which is best for checking updates, submitting files and messages. We can access this pages from everywhere we want. Pelotonics seems to work on all platforms (but IE7 is most recommended). Best, there is no software downloading or data synchronizing.

    5. Peletonics is all about transparency and trust between project team and clients. The software accommodates the fast and updated information that can be accessed by both team and clients. Team can get prompt reply by posting a message to the client via the project management portal.

    Pinging Tricks

Posted in blog, pinging, wordpress | Monday 25 August 2008 8:41 pm

You’re a blogger and are constantly hearing about pinging. The thing is, you don’t know what it is and what it can do for your blog. Well that’s fine because a lot of bloggers don’t quite understand pinging. In this newsletter, we will explain what pinging is, how it helps your blog, and what the best pinging services are. After you’ve read this newsletter, you’ll know exactly how to use pinging to make your blog popular.

    What is pinging?

When a blog is pinged, it essentially tells a web blog tracking system that the blog has been updated. Thus, pinging is the process of telling tracking services that a site has been updated.

So how does pinging work? Well, a ping service scans regularly blogs for updates. Whenever there is a new update for a particular blog, that is reported back to the pinging service?s site. You can almost think of ping services being just like search engine spiders, both scan sites looking for information, and both report that information back to their specific site. The difference is, a ping service only reports back new blog posts.

Why is pinging useful for my blog?

Pinging, in effect, tells people that there is a new blog posting available. Those who are loyal followers of your blog will see the ping and want to visit your blog. Those who haven?t read your blog before will see the ping and perhaps think ?hey, there?s a new blog I haven?t been to before, I think I?ll check it out?. Pinging helps to increase your traffic because it tells people when your blog is updated. Those who visit sites with pinging services will see this information in the form of a scroll on the left or right side, or top of the page. The scroll is usually in XML format and typically includes the title and URL of your blog, as well as the date and time of the update.

OK, so now I know what pinging is. Who offers pinging?

The answer is, there are several pinging services available which you can use to have your blog pinged. We?ll go over some of them right now.

    Weblogs.com

Weblogs.com is probably the most well-known pinging service. Weblogs.com monitors sites for updates and then pings whenever there is an update to report. Virtually every blog software is available to use Weblogs.

    Blo.gs

Another popular pinging service. This one is offered by Yahoo and has a built-in integration with movable type and other tools. One cool thing about this service is that it offers the ability to give out updates via Instant Messenging services like AOL and ICQ. It is a direct pinging service, so those who sign up for subscriptions to your blog will be sent an email anytime your blog is updated.

    Blogrolling.com

Blogrolling allows its bloggers to manage their blogrolls (updates) through a web-based interface. Recently updated blogs are also highlighted on Blogrolling?s web site. Data is automatically retrieved from other sites like blogger.com and weblogs.com every 5 minutes. Often times your blog is already being pinged by Blogrolling, so you might not have to sign up for it. Search on the site first for your URL before signing it up.

    Technorati

Available at http://rpc.technorati.com/rpc/ping, Technorati is another service that pings blogs. It gets its data from a variety of places and is definitely a site you should go to for blog pinging.

These are just 4 of the many different blog pinging services available. A quick search on Yahoo or Google will reveal many other possible blog pinging services to use for your blog. It is best to sign up for as many as you possibly can to ensure that your blog is well-pinged. A well-pinged blog will definitely help your blog attract more visitors. So sign up for as many as possible and watch your blog traffic increase.

Pinging tells people when your blog is updated. It is an incredibly useful, and easy to sign up for service, so be sure to sign your blog up for pinging!

    Self Hosted Blog? Think again!!?

Posted in blog, internet, webhosting, wordpress | Monday 25 August 2008 8:35 pm

So you?ve decided to blog, but aren?t sure whether you should host the blog yourself or sign up for a free service like blogger.com. It?s a dilemma that many bloggers face. There are pros and cons to both, which makes the decision difficult for many. Neither is perfect, and neither is for everyone. Fortunately, you should be able to make the best decision for you if you are armed with adequate knowledge of both. In this newsletter, we?ll go over services like blogger.com and others, plus software that allows you to host your own blog. We?ll also go over the pros and cons of each. After reading this, you will know which is best for you.

    Who offers free blog hosting?

Many sites offer free blog hosting. Among them are Forumer, Blogger, BlogEasy, Aeonity, BlogThing and Blogates. A quick search for ?free blog? on Google reveals many possibilities.

What software can I use to host my own blog?

Like free blog hosting, there are many possibilities for software that makes hosting your own blog easy. Most of them are free to use. These include:

    WordPress(the most popular software)
    Apache Roller
    Blosxom
    Geeklog
    Textpattern
    LifeType

There is also blog software which you can purchase for use on your site. These include:

    Community Server
    Movable Type
    Radio UserLand

One negative about using software and hosting your own blog is that the process can often times be complicated. You have to download the software and install it to your server, which doesn?t always go easily. It?s particularly hard for those who don?t have a lot of experience installing things on servers.

Why should I remotely host my blog at a place like Blogger?

Places like Blogger allow you to host your blog there. It?s a good option for many people.

    The Pros

? It?s easy to set up and maintain a blog. You don?t have to go through the trouble of installing software and configuring it to work on your server. All you have to do is sign up for an account and start posting.

? It?s friendly for beginning bloggers. Sites that host blogs offer good tutorials on how to make your blog postings, so that even someone who is completely new to the concept of blogging can do it easily.

? Most blog hosting sites are completely free to use. There is no need to pay for things like a domain name and hosting.

? Monetizing your blog is easy. Rather than having to manually put HTML/Javascript codes on your blog to manually set up things like AdSense and Pay Per Click advertising, you can select an option on most blog hosting sites that does much of the work for you.

    The Cons

? You don?t have as many options to customize your blog. Remotely hosted blogs are admittedly somewhat limited in terms of what you can actually do on them. You have to stick with what is provided to you in terms of look and features.

? The URL you get is always yourname.BLOGSITE.com. You don?t get to have a custom domain name like YOURNAME.com. This can possibly hurt traffic to your blog.

? Blogs hosted on free blog sites don?t look as professional as self hosted blogs.

Why should I self-host my blog?

    The Pros

? You have more options and more flexibility. You are able to tweak the blog to your liking.

? Your URL is your address for your blog. Rather than having go to where your blog is hosted to read it, they can read it right from your site.

? The ability to make your blog look professional. Blogs that are hosted on sites of their own tend to look a lot better than those hosted on free sites.

? More space for your blog. Free blog sites usually place a restriction on how much space you have for things like photos and music. By hosting your own blog, you are able to use as much space as you need.

    The Cons

? There are sometimes problems with setting up blog software to run on your site and server. If you aren?t experienced when it comes to working with mySQL, the process will be hard.

? Updates aren?t as easy to post.

? You have to manually set up programs to monetize your blog. However, if you are good with HTML/Javascript, this shouldn?t be too hard.

? You have to pay for your own hosting and domain

As you can see, there are pros and cons to both. Which should you choose? Well, it depends on who you are and what you intend to use your blog for. If you intend to use it for business, then a self-hosted blog is the best idea. If it?s a personal blog, then a free hosted blog will probably be fine for you.

Closely examine all of the pros and cons mentioned above. That way, you?ll be able to make the best decision for you!

YYG Goes down on it’s users + A new theory on the true identities of Arrow-Head and Spazz

Posted in wordpress | Tuesday 19 August 2008 10:40 pm

Well, as I write today’s post, I am unable to access YoYo and look for the latest from our SatanChild-like friends Arrow-Head and Spazz, but I’ve still got more than enough news to write about here! ;)

First though, let’s take a look at YoYo’s current downtime. I’ve not got much indication of how long it’s been going on for, but when I first came online today at around 10:21 AM GMT I logged on to YoYo to see:

    YoYoGames.com wrote:

The system is down for maintenance as of 10:06 AM GMT Daylight time.

    It’ll be back shortly.

Since then it has come up again [access required a password though] and gone back down. As I write this it is 11:30 GMT and the system claims it’s been down since 11:02.

What could be the cause of this? For the first time in a while, GM News was the first to get it’s hands on some YoYo-related news …

… in GM News’ Post: “Glog - GMWeekly - ‘Amazing Code’”

    Benjamin Poole wrote:

“The YoYo Games Glog received an official update today. Boasting an updated version of WordPress, the blog will open up to a broader range of topics including those previously reserved for Mark Overmars’ (no longer in use) personal blog.

Records of user registrations have been wiped clean, so all users will have to re-register for posting however for the time being users can post after having their comment approved by a moderator of the glog.”

I’m not sure how long YoYo will be down for today, and looking at their record it could stretch into tomorrow [>_>] but considering the size of the update it shouldn’t take them any more than an extra hour or two at most.

Next up today is the news that Arrow-Head just might be serious about this IRL fight he challenged me to … and yes, he’s providing a real stage now, not a place in Runescape like yesterday (NERD!) - he change the location he was talking about and told me to meet him there today at 9:00. I wasn’t there obviously, but Arrow-Head hasn’t made a comment since he told me to take my car “or whatever vecichle you have” to the “real lava factory” he mentioned on yesterday’s post. XD

… on Yesterday’s Post: “the backup never lies + Arrow-Head and Spazz return with posting permissions undamaged”

    tigerdude1993 wrote:

“oh…my…god…RUNESCAPE?! hahahahahahaha! what a loser! the only people i know that play that game are a bunch of no-life nerds! lol this guy is a loser D

    TurboX wrote:

“Sorry AKH for being a jerk, and I accept your apology though i was the jerk in all this”

    Arrow-Head wrote:

“sorry then i must mean the port talbot blast furnace
    we meet there tommorow
do not miss this chance if you wanna have a fight and see which one of us kick ass

09:00 AM remember that so get your car or whatever vecichle you have and come

    i will be there

    Port Talbot blast furnace
    09:00 AM”

    TurboX wrote:

“These places sound like something out of runescape, correct me if i’m wrong”

    Arrow-Head wrote:

“google talbot it is a real lava factory not a runescape place this time

i am serious about meeting AKH there so dont refuse this

    talbot furnace exists”

[I Googled it, it's a real place in South Wales. Unfortunately it makes iron, not lava.]

    I wrote:

    ““lava factory” … lol.”

    TurboX wrote:

“Yeah I doubt that very much”

    tigerdude1993 wrote:

“it’s funny how arrow-head keeps avoiding my comments. afraid? hahahahaha that’s to be expected ;)

Lastly for today comes a very interesting theory surrounding the true identities of Arrow-Head and Spazz. it started today with a brilliant observation made by tigerdude in his latest post (this is great) …

… in tigerdude’s post: “Are We Overlooking Something?”

    tigerdude1993 wrote:

“And now for the thing that we have overlooked this entire time…

Could Dr. Spazz have been hacked by ” and then have been used to frame TurboX? I think so. The password was easily guessable, and it was SPAZZ (bolded and ALL CAPS, for reason. you’ll find out later.). I have a feeling that SC guessed the password and took over the account, and did what Enrai did…insulted Alice. So why did I bold that password? Because it was the name of SC’s newest account!

Definitely give me your feedback on this one, it’s pretty interesting.”

Now THAT is a good theory. SC could have been giving us clues all along and we haven’t been noticing them. Right now, I’m thinking that Arrow-Head is the genuine Arrow-Head we knew before, and in a slight role-reversal SC is playing the underling here - Spazz.

Although maybe the Arrow-Head we knew all along was actually SC in the first place … we’ve seen already how he can create a new identity, and Arrow-Head mirrors SC’s ways almost perfectly - so this could be just one person we’re dealing with here - SC.

Although, in my opinion, Arrow-Head and Spazz are different people - I believe Arrow-Head is who he said he was when he first showed up on YoYo, and in light of your new findings, Spazz is probably SC - I highly doubt Enrai is involved in any of this. ;)

Above were my views immediately after I read tigerdude’s post. However, during the course of writing this post, I have made quite a discovery of my own.

it came when I was manually writing part of Arrow-Head’s comment into my sentence earlier … the part where he says “vecichles” … to be precise. it triggered a thought in my head. I was sure I had seen that word mispelled in exactly that way before … but by who, you ask? let’s take a trip back in time to the post “Techno VS Zonik”

    SC666 Loves War wrote:

“And so I love Tanks so I shall tank u AKH D

CANT U JUST LOVE IT D MECHS FTW WILL CRUSH TANKS UNDER THERE FEET ITS THE NEXT GENERATION VECICHLES WITH PLASMA CANNONS YAAAAAY”

SC’s been caught out by matching spelling mistakes between accounts before … anyone remember Abadon?

The same thing has happened here. I can say now, with a high amount of certainty, that Arrow-Head is, and always has been, SatanChild666. And thanks to tigerdude we have a mountain of evidence shouting the same for Spazz.

    A happy customer

One downside to Web 2.0 technologies is that most of them are out of our control. We use them, but can only change what we are allowed to and if something blows up we are at the mercy of the service owners to fix it in a timely manner. I have had small share of these disasters but nothing major. I had an email hijacked and had to give it up. Unfortunately it was attached to damn near everything else so I was screwed if I forgot a password because they email them to… you guessed it… and since that email addy was dead, the only way to get back in to the account to change the email was to… you guessed it again… log in to the account I had forgotten the password for. I also used the Microsoft blogging service through the Live portal and lost a year and a half worth of blog entries, pictures and contacts when they did an “upgrade”. I squawked enough that I did actually finally get a response from them, but it was predictable. “We’re very sorry you lost all your stuff. No, you can’t get it back.” This is the reason I dumped the service for good and went to WordPress.

So you can imagine my stress level when things started to go afoul here yesterday. I could see this blog listed in dropdowns and tabs, but I couldn’t get the interface to actually CHANGE to it when I chose it. It still showed my personal blog. When I told it to publish to this blog by choosing it from the menu, it published to my personal blog instead. And then, finally, Wordpress rolled over and this blog disappeared for good from all my admin tabs and menus.

Now, granted, this blog has been in existence only a couple of weeks, so it’s not like I was losing much. But I do like the name and had a bad feeling support was just going to say “We’re sorry… etc.” and I would lose the name. Since even that taxed what little creativity I have, I had already started trying to think up something else.

Finally, tech support contacted me and said the most surprising of things. Yes, there was a problem. Yes, it was on their end. Yes, they had fixed it. Yes, everything was fine. Go forth and blog…

I have always, always, ALWAYS said that customer service is dying. Nobody seems to care anymore. I will pay MORE for a product or service if you simply treat me with a little courtesy, communicate openly with me (even if it’s bad news) and genuinely seem like you give a hoot. I will also be fiercely loyal and make sure everyone I talk to knows how good you are. That’s the way it’s supposed to work.

So. WordPress did their part. They were responsive, dealt with the problem, communicated effectively and followed up. Nuff said. If you are looking for a blogging service and can’t decide… they all have pretty much the same services. Although Wordpress doesn’t allow some things (like Flash widgets, etc.) they do it for safety reasons. They have my recommendation. Give all your bloggy love to WordPress.

    Wordpress Growth Rocks

Posted in wordpress | Sunday 17 August 2008 8:09 pm

TechCrunch calls the growth of the Wordpress blogging platform, as announced today at WordCamp, “Awesome.”

It doesn’t surprise me at all that U.S. unique visitors to Wordpress.com have roughly tripled in the last year to 20.9 million per month, while Typepad.com has only increased about 20 percent to 7.2 million. The two platforms were roughly equal a year ago.

But what wasn’t equal was the value proposition. Wordpress.com offers 3 gigabytes of free storage and unlimited bandwidth, and for $45 a year you can customize the CSS, buy an extra 5 gigs of storage (and the ability to upload mp3 files so you can host podcasts), and map your blog to a domain or subdomain of your choosing.

You’d have to spend at least $299 a year on Typepad.com for anything approaching this functionality. And the cheapest, entry-level package price on Typepad.com is $49.50 a year.

With Typepad you can get a two-week free trial, but with Wordpress.com you can blog for free almost indefinitely. And even with upgrades that would give most people as much functionality and capacity as they could possibly need, the cost for Wordpress.com is still less that that for the stripped-down version of Typepad.

It all adds up to powerful incentives for new bloggers to start with Wordpress.com, because all it costs them is their time to learn.

And that doesn’t even take into account the free, open source Wordpress.org software you can download and install on another server for even more functionality.

    Ben Martin agrees.
